Allium ampeloprasum

Excellent fall and winter leek with long white stalks and excellent ability to overwinter.  Hardy down to -10 F at Giving Ground Farm when covered with mats of straw for overwintering protection. Overwinters more successfully when young.  Very tall leeks, stalks will blanch well if hilled and mounded.  We originally got this rare variety from Adaptive Seeds, who got it from the Irish Seed Savers Exchange.

Start indoors up to 12 weeks before last frost. Plant 75-100 seeds in a one gallon pot, lightly covering with soil. No thinning necessary during this phase. Transplant at 6-12” apart when leaves are about the thickness of a pencil.
