We prefer to direct sow 3-4 weeks prior to last frost date. Tolerant of a light frost. Cover very lightly. Grows easily when direct sown, so that is preferred. Or, start indoors 8 weeks before last frost date to get a head start. Transplants quite well provided it is kept moist during the establishment process.
