Vicia faba

80 days. Large seeded, rare fava bean that does particularly well in the heat and cold. Beautiful tan-green seeds. Eat pods fresh or wait for dry seeds and eat them as a dry bean. Fava beans, or broad beans, are the hardiest member of the bean family. They can handle temps as low as 15 degrees F.

Plant during a break in the weather in early- late March. Plant 2.5" deep, thin to 1' apart, with rows 18" apart. May take up to 3 weeks to emerge. Likes water, do not under-water as the weather warms up. Tolerates and even prefers light shade for a period of the day in midsummer.  Harvest dry seed pods in late summer into a bag. Free seeds by beating the bag, use a fan to separate light chaff from heavy beans.

In climates where winter temperatures do not dip below 15 degrees F, planting in fall is preferable.
