Alcea rosea

Plant of many uses, black hollyhocks are a country garden favorite.  Traditionally used to mark the location of the outhouse, hollyhocks make an amazing cut flower and easy to harvest black hollyhock petals make an excellent dye.   Biennial plants will self-sow modestly so you probably wont have to worry about ever planting them again.

Direct sow 3-4 weeks prior to last frost date. Tolerant of a light frost. Cover lightly. Or, we prefter to start indoors up to 8 weeks before last frost date to get a head start. Transplants quite well provided it is kept moist during the establishment process.
