Lactuca sativa

Butterhead type with burgundy tinge.  This is a rare heirloom variety that could do very well in market production as the leaves stand up away from the soil and are easy to harvest and clean.  Leaves a large and crispy, and loose heads can be cut as heads or individual leaves.  Standard lettuce flavor tending slightly toward the bitter side.  Nice texture.  Relatively slow to bolt even in a hot summer.  We got this lettuce from the Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook who obtained it from the late Mary Schultz.
