Physalis pruinosa

65 days.  We got this interesting ground cherry from the Experimental Farm Network.  They bought the fruit from a woman, named Mary, at a roadside stand in Niagra-on-the-Lake, Ontario.  Being from northern climes, this ground cherry is very early and is an excellent choice for short season climates.  With a prostrate growing habit, this one spreads out and some of the berries end up hanging only inches off the ground.  We think this ground cherry will get more and more popular!

Ground cherries are loaded with phytochemicals and flavonoids.  Looking for unique uses other than salsa verde- they add a nice savory flavor to spaghetti sauces or roast them whole!  Or, dry them like sundried tomatoes or raisins.

Start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before average last frost date. Thin to the strongest plant per pot. Transplant 18-24" apart in full sun, plants transplant better when small, 10-12". Ground cherries are ripe when the husk gets papery, or they fall off the plant.  Plant more than one, as they benefit from cross pollination.
