Quick facts
-
*Low Impact Food ALERT* No energy intensive food processing necessary for winter eating
*Low Impact Food ALERT* This crop gets by on less. It needs less water and nutrient inputs than other foods.
*Heat/Drought ALERT* Adapted to thrive in tough conditions, heat, and drought
*Marginal Soils ALERT* Bloom where you’re planted! This crop is resilient and adapted to thrive on marginal soils with low fertility.
*Diverse Population ALERT* Grow this population as is or use for your at home plant breeding project. It’s crop adaptation made simple- select those plants that grow best for you, save seeds, plant them next year, and repeat.

Phaseolus acutifolius
90 days, bush habit. The Bavi, or tepary bean, is the most drought adapted bean in the world. We originally obtained seed from Native Seed Search, an organization whose mission is to "Conserve and share the seeds of the people of the desert Southwest and Mexico so that these arid-adapted crops may benefit communities and nourish a changing world." It is also called W'pegi bawi. These beans range from tan to red to brown and are from Menagers Dam, a Tohono O'odham community near the Mexican border. They are from a high desert climate and do great in our garden. They would grow well in most places provided they are not overwatered, especially once the seed pods are mature and drying down on the plant when we stop watering completely.

| Tepary beans are native to North America and are heat and drought tolerant. Plant 1" deep and 6" apart after all danger of frost has passed. Plants are not tolerant of much shade. Do not over water. Bush plants will not climb a trellis. Harvest dry plants and shake in a bag to free beans from pods. Use a fan to blow off chaff. |
