Cucurbita maxima
100 days. This is the second generation of a successful cross between 'Sweetmeat Oregon Homestead' and 'Fairytale' pumpkin. In the first generation, only one fruit matured in our short season climate- and it was a beauty with deep bright orange flesh. We saved that fruit and planted all of the seeds from it. The result is this wonderful second generation, full of exciting diversity in outward color and size. The insides are consistently bright orange, which is was our goal, and excellent in flavor. Some diversity in texture, but all string less, smooth, and delicious. Diverse populations are excellent to grow if you want to try your hands at plant breeding. Simply grow a good amount and select those fruits which do well to save seeds from.

Plant 1-2" deep in small mounds 24" apart. Winter squash are heavy feeders so provide fertility initially, then every few weeks through the season. Harvest before the first frost, as even a slight frost will damage the flesh and make the squash unstorable. Allow to cure in a sunny, frost free location for 2-3 weeks. This curing process seals the pores of the squash skin for storage and improves flavor. Learn more about growing, harvesting, and curing squash in our blog post about it! |
