Dianthus chinensis var heddewigii

Unique version of a quintessential cottage garden perennial. Dark flowers range from eggplant-purple to black petals with white fringey edges. Flowers fully double and very lacey.  Attractive foliage is dark green to blueish and grasslike.  Very compact, free flowering plants reach only 14" at most.  Flowers smell faintly of cloves.  Does best in well drained soils and makes a lovely garden border.  And!  Wait for it.... Plants are self-cleaning!  So no laborious dead-heading and trimming at the end of the season.
