Quick facts

*Heat/Drought ALERT* Adapted to thrive in tough conditions, heat, and drought

*Diverse Population ALERT* Grow this population as is or use for your at home plant breeding project. It’s crop adaptation made simple- select those plants that grow best for you, save seeds, plant them next year, and repeat.

  • Landrace of diverse genetics
  • Bolt resistant
  • Wide harvest window

Coriandrum sativum

40-75 days.  Here is a landrace we've been working on, an inter-breeding mixture of 8 varieties of slow-bolt cilantro.  Genetically diverse, a wide harvest window means the harvest is spread over months rather than weeks.  Diversity in leaf shape and size, some contain the genetics of large-leaf Thai cilantro, some are delicate and ferny and easy to chop finely for salsa.  Cilantro typically enjoys cool, wet weather, but this landrace is made of varieties bred to push those limits into hot, dry conditions and not be stressed to the point of flowering, aka bolting.  Summers heat up guickly here, leaving most spring-loving cilantro varieties bolting before the tomatoes are ripe for salsa.  Instead, we want a lengthy harvest window and cilantro plants that stay in the vegetative state- that's why "slow bolting" is the central trait we are selecting for in this otherwise diverse landrace.

This is a diverse population you can use from plant breeding projects.  If you want to use these for a breeding project simply grow them out, select the best plants, and save the seed for next year.  See what you get, select the best, and repeat!

Better adapted to cooler weather, direct so around the average last frost date. Plant every 2 weeks to ensure a steady supply. Small plants are mildly frost tolerant, while larger plants may easily overwinter. Does not transplant well. Harvest leaves by picking a few from around the edges of each plant or cutting the whole plant.
