Lactuca sativa

Originally from the University of Hawaii, this lettuce thrives in warmer weather.  Bright green leaves with tight cores are mild tasting and crispy.  Slow to bolt and mild even when grown in heat, Batavian lettuces are heat tolerant and can be harvested for the whole head or as cut and come again leaf lettuces. The Hawaiian name, pronounced ah-new-ee-new-ee, means rainbow.

Direct sow up to 4 weeks before the average last frost. Plant successively every two weeks to keep you in young greens, or give them more space to mature and harvest the whole head.
