Quick Facts:
- Rare variety from plant breeder Joseph Lofthouse's family
Triticum aestivum
Here is a family heirloom shared with us by Jospeph Lofthouse. It was developed by his great-great-grandfather James Lofthouse in the 1880s. The family story about how the variety came to be was that James was walking through his wheat field and noticed one plant growing better than the others. He marked it and grew it in his home garden. At one time, it was the most widely planted wheat in Northern Utah and Southern Idaho. For highest yield, fall planting is best, but this variety can be spring planted as well.
