- Excellent flavor as a dry bean
Phaseolus vulgaris
Pole bean with dark pink flowers. Not a snap bean, used as a dry bean or a shelling bean. Very cute round sparrow's egg seeds!!! We got this dry bean from the Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook, where is won staff favorite for great dry bean taste in 2013! They obtained it from the Medomak Valley High School Heirloom Seed Project which received the bean from Margaretta (Warren) Thurlow (1911-2009) of Lincolnville, Maine. It was handed down through Margaretta's mother's side, the Fernald family of Matinicus Island, ME since at least the 1890s.

Direct sow 1” deep after all danger of frost has passed near a trellis. In row spacing is 3” with 8” between rows. Soaking seeds for 2-4 hours can hasten germination time. Planting with bean specific bacterial inoculum may help boost yields, especially if planting where beans have not grown before. Seed specs: 30 min. |
